Kids without ADHD can have difficulty with managing money, making impulse purchases. Imagine what can happen when you put kids with ADHD in an environment designed to get kids to make impulse purchases. 🤯
During Summer Trip Camp I teach the kids about making a “future plan” for spending money because I want them to be prepared for the full sensory blitz that they’re going to find when we go to the various Jersey Shore boardwalks.
𝗜 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴:
✅Teach the concept of making a “future plan” for spending money which means visualizing what you want and then using your “brain coach” to ask yourself if you’ll want it 2 hours later, 2 days later, etc..(I explain that most of the time the answer is “no”).
✅Ask the parents to send the kids with no more than $10–20 at a time (depending on the trip) so the kids have to think more about how/where they’re going to spend money.
✅We watch videos watching the New Jersey gaming commission investigate carnival games on the boardwalks and showing how they are often rigged.
✅Show pictures of the insides of different types of stores on the boardwalks and we discuss how each type of store is designed to make kids spend money impulsively (particularly the overpriced candy stores like the one in this picture).
✅”Frontload” before we go on the boardwalks using the language I talk about in Webinar 1 of Executive Function Crash Course to help the guys use their own self-directed talk (brain coach) to model what having an internal dialogue about making a purchase sounds like.
✅Encourage the guys to remind each what we talked about if they see one of the other kids get excited about buying something because it means a lot more coming from each other than it does from me. I love seeing when they do this.
