Getting a 6th grader to buy into learning executive functioning strategies — Ryan Wexelblatt, LCSW

In my experience, one of the fundamental flaws of much ADHD and executive function coaching is that the coach operates from this assumption that the individual is highly motivated to utilize the strategies being taught.

Many families have shared with me that they've tried ADHD coaching only to find that their child was not invested in the process.

When I I teach executive functioning strategies I sell kids on the idea of having more time to themselves. I also begin by focusing the strategies on their interests, not on academics.

Today, I used Sarah Ward & Kristen Jacobsen Get Ready, Do, Done model with a 6th grader to focus on his goal of becoming a better basketball player.
