Your parenting skills are not defined by your son’s school work output.

Parents have often shared with me that they worry if they do not keep on top of their son’s grades they are concerned that it will reflect poorly on them as a parent. As a result, some micromanage their son’s academics and in the process deny their son the opportunity to develop self-advocacy and independent problem solving skills.

I have known kids who produced little schoolwork/homework, came from supportive families and went on to be successful, independent young adults.

I have met young adults who were excellent students, graduated college and were essentially unemployable because they lacked the social competency, cognitive flexibility or problem-solving skills required to be successful in a job.

Your son’s work output is not a reflection on your parenting. It is not a reflection of his potential.

Focus on what are the more accurate predictors of future success.
